As stated by UNFPA spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, Antonio Guterres regretted US decision to end funding and warned that such a step could trigger devastating health effects on vulnerable women and girls worldwide.
According to the spokesman, Guterres considers that the United States took its decision based on an mistaken perception on UNFPA work.
The White House debated this founding withdrawal with UNFPA in an alleged program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization in China.
"We rebuff this viewpoint, since our work is mainly aimed at fostering human rights of individuals and couples", according to the UNFPA.
UNFPA work is financed by voluntary contributions of the UN-Member States, and has as priorities its support for family planning and mother and child health program in at least 150 nations.
Available data prove that in 2015 the United States was the fourth nation with the highest contributions to UNFPA, with $75 million.
According to the US Department of State, President Donald Trump ordered the Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to proceed, in tune with Washington's new vision on its relations with the UN, including a funding reduction to the UN budget and a more aggressive position to champion its interests.
